Getting Healthy with Nutrisystem: Week 9.

A funny thing happened on the way to the farm this week. I ran out of my Nutrisystem food. There was a little snafu with my order, and though all is well and I am totally back on my plan now, I definitely struggled a bit.

I honestly didn't think I was struggling though. I did what I always do when a problem arises; I came up with a solution. I thought about how I would transition off of Nurtisystem and that is what I did. I stuck to my eating schedule and substituted regular food from the grocery store. Well, food that I thought was comparable. I choose lower calorie, lower sugar, high protein and high fiber food. I ate at the same times that I normally eat my Nurtisystem food. I managed. Though I really have to admit that I missed the food, especially my favorite protein packed Fudge Graham Bars.

Nutrisystem Fudge Graham Bars

What I didn't manage to do was lose any weight. I guess it goes to show how powerful and how well Nutrisystem really works. In just five days of being off of Nutrisystem and eating similar foods, I gained 3 pounds, bringing my weight loss down to just 12 pounds. It was not what I was expecting.

I am going to stick to Nutrisystem 100% and work out extra hard to lose that weight. I will back on track and will still try to reach my goals!

Getting Healthy with Nutrisystem: Week 6.

Boy time flies. I can't believe I have been on my Nutrisystem plan for six weeks now. Like anything, with time, things get easier. I feel like I have found my groove.

When I first started the plan, I was constantly looking at my app, guide and daily tracker. I needed to figure out what I needed to eat and at what times. I needed to make sure I was eating all my food.

Something clicked over the last week and I feel like a lot of this is routine for me now. And that is such a wonderful thing.

Staying healthy with Nutrisystem motivation.

I know what I am supposed to eat, in what order, and what time of day. When I am busy and not home, I have planned for it. I am bringing my water bottle with me wherever I go. I always have a few lunch bars, a PowerFuel, and a SmartCarb in my bag just to be safe. The only thing I have to decide is exactly what Nutrisystem food I am going to eat.

I have also stuck to my exercise routine. I am walking every morning. I like this alone time and it really gets my head in the right place for the day. My husband and I have also been walking four or five nights a week too. He even has me jogging a bit around the track.

I feel like I can finally keep up with everything; the planning, the exercise and the most importantly, the eating. Yes, I have found my groove. This week I lost 1.5 pounds, making my total weight loss 12 pounds so far. Every pound lost counts and is adding up.

Getting Healthy with Nutrisystem: Week 5.

I had a rough week. I am super busy and super stressed. Every little thing seemed to bother me. I haven't felt like this in a long time. Staying on my Nutrisystem plan was not easy.

I am a stress eater and have been for years. It is one of those things that got me to where I am with my weight, I know that. I try to avoid stress and do other things besides eat now. I call my sister. I go for a walk. I do what I can to get out of the situation.

For the most part, it is working. Then Saturday night happened, when I wasn't even stressed, but I think it was the result of the previous few days. We were out shopping, and on our way into the store there was a food truck. My husband says we need to eat. I tell him there is no way we are eating from a food truck. Until I notice they are making fresh apple cider donuts. Without a second thought, I say, "Get some!". I only had a bite. Not even 1/4 of the donut. It tasted so good. I was satisfied. Until we were walking back out, by said donuts and my husband stopped for more. The boys needed more. I thought I was fine, until I felt the warmth of the donuts in the bag. I reached in and ate the whole thing. I didn't think twice.

It didn't stop there. We went to dinner, and not to the healthiest place. There was no healthy option beside a salad, so that was the plan. That is, until the waiter asks if we want chips and salsa with our drinks and I say  "suuuuure", and dove right in.

I was disappointed in myself. But that wasn't the worst part. I felt physically sick to my stomach. I was not used the the sugar and heaviness of the donut. Combine that with a few handfuls of tortilla chips and salsa -- you get the point.

I vowed to be better. I took a 5.3 mile walk Sunday morning, but still wasn't quite back on track. Though I did exercise every day, I did not get back on track with my eating regularly as I had been for a few days. It is so easy to give up, but I am not. I have been back to staying on my Nutrisystem plan and tracking everything as I should.

I did get on the scale and my weight stayed the same. I am relieved that I didn't gain any weight, but my unexpected few days off didn't help on my getting healthy plan. I have to remember that I am down 10.5 pounds so far and I am fitting into clothes that I couldn't earlier this summer. I will not let this slip up get me down. I can do this; I just have to keep reminding myself.

Getting Healthy with Nutrisystem: Week 4.

Before I tell you if this week was successful on my getting healthy with Nutrisystem plan, I want to talk to you about something that is very important. I want to talk about support. When it comes to making a major life change like this, support is critical.

Support is super important when on a weight loss program!

I was worried that my husband what not be supportive of the change I was making. I told him that I am doing it this time. At first there was some skepticism. My husband is very supportive of me and everything I do. He loves me for me and always tells me I am beautiful. He likes the extra "chunk" I have. He would yell at me if I was eating light when eating out. If I would pass on an ice cream when taking the kids out, he would get me one anyway. He didn't like to see me deprived. But he understands that I need to do this for myself. He wants me to be more confident and happy with myself. He has really been very supportive. He is helping me come up with ways to get in my ever important PowerFuels that I have not been eating as much as I should. He came up with a great recipe for my protein shake and now I want more than one each day. (More on that in another post.) He asks me how I am doing all the time. He asks me every few days how much weight I have lost and is very encouraging when I have nothing to report. He also reminded me that I should only be weighing myself once a week.

See also: Getting Healthy with Nutrisystem Introduction

My kids have been very supportive too. While I got a few eye rolls when I showed them how loose my shorts were, they are constantly asking me what I am eating. They help me find the healthiest items on the menu when we go out for dinner. I know they secretly go out for donuts without me, but they are very thoughtful and supportive to not bring any back to the house. Nutrisystem has a chocolate covered donut on the plan along with a huge array of sweet breakfast items and that is what I need to stick with!

I have also found a lot of support from Nutrisystem. I have been quietly looking around the message boards and have found a lot of information. While I have been quiet, the members are very supportive of each other.

I also had to get support from the dietician at Nutrisystem, in which I had a response within an hour. From that email, we exchanged a few where I learned that I was doing a few things wrong on the plan. I left the conversation better understanding the "system" and exactly what these specialized PowerFuels and SmartCarbs were and when to eat them. I could read as much as I could in the very useful Resource Guide, but somehow having someone tell me in their own word what these were, was very beneficial to me. Most importantly, I learned that to be successful, I do need to eat them at certain times of the day and that I need to eat more of them when exercising a lot. Overall, I learned that I have not been eating as much as I should, and I noticed that when my calorie count was less than what it was supposed to be. I was told, "1250 calories per day on the women’s plan is typically an average, the meal plan can vary by 100 calories (+/-) depending on your selection of Nutrisystem entrees and or grocery additions. If you are counting calories your goal is to be roughly somewhere between 1150-1350 calories per day. However, Nutrisystem is designed so that as long as you are following the meal plan correctly you should be falling within those numbers without having to count out your total daily calories." I am glad that my Nutrisystem app counts out the calories because I knew I should be around 1250 per day, and most days I was barely getting 1,000 calories. I knew something was wrong because I wasn't feeling quite myself and I have been starting to feel hungry.

Thank goodness for all of the support because I really do need it to keep me on track. It is very easy to get off track and fast, and I do not want to do that.

This week was another success. I should add that I am not looking for much for a week to be a success. Nutrisystem recommends slow and steady weightloss-- 1-2 pounds per week. I'll take a .5 pound loss as a success, because I am one that has always followed that rule of slow and steady. With that said, this week, I lost 2.5 pounds, making my total weight loss so far 10.5 pounds. I reached my one month goal of losing 10 pounds! I am excited and pretty proud of myself.

Getting Healthy with Nutrisystem: Week 8.

Now that I am half way through my 16 week Nutrisystem program, I figure it is time to set some goals.

Initially, I wanted to lose about 30 pounds. that was approximate, because I didn't really know what I wanted to or should weigh it was really about 33 or 34 pounds. I can't remember the exact number at this point; I had a goal weight in mind. That was until I was at the doctor a few weeks into the program.

Up until this point, my doctor never told me that I needed to lose a certain amount of weight, but we talked about it at length during this visit. He thought I was smart about getting on track with my health and that losing weight was a part of that. He actually suggested I lose a little more than I wanted to. He told me that in his experience, patients would gain about 5 pounds when they transition off of a plan like Nutrisystem.

I kept that in mind and am trying to gauge what size I want to be when I am not just finished with Nutrisystem, but when I am at my healthy weight goal. I have decided that in total, I want to lose 40 pounds. I feel this is do-able and that I will hopefully be at a size that I want to be, and at a healthy weight, with my BMI at a good point.

My initial goal was to lose 10 pounds in my first month. I reached that goal. I want to make it a goal to lose 5 pounds a month from here on out, because that's about what I lost in the last month. I have realized that I lose weight slowly, but I think I can keep it off this way. I lost another 1.5 pounds this week, which makes my 8 week total of 15 pounds lost. With this in mind, I have a goal to lose 25 pounds when my 16 weeks with Nutrisystem is over. It is not as much as I had initially planned, but I feel I will be on track and on my way.  When my Nutrisytem 16 week plan is actually over, I will reassess and set more goals and a plan to lose that last 15 pounds on my own.

Getting Healthy with Nutrisystem: Week 7.

Did you ever notice that every celebration or social gathering seems to revolve around food? And very rarely is any of this food healthy. I had a week full of dinners out, celebrations, dinner with friends, a luncheon, bridal shower and cook outs. The unhealthy food was flowing. Planning and make the right choices had to be done. It wasn't easy though, I will tell you that.

Remember you have a choice...

For most functions, I made an effort to plan ahead. I would eat a Nutrisystem bar that is full of protein and very filling. I would also make sure to have filled up on water. I figured if I were full, I would pass up on any hors d'oeuvres or stick my hand in the bread basket. I chose to hang out by the veggie platter a few times and would order salad or carefully chose food from the "light" menu. It was harder at the two buffet style parties I went to, but I basically ate light and chose what I thought were the healthiest options. It is the only way I could stay on track. It was not easy, especially passing on the yummy desserts. The funny thing is, I am of the mind set now that I am not being deprived. I am making the choice to be healthier, and my reward is in that. Not to mention that watching the numbers on the scale go down is a great reward too.

This week, I did see my number on the scale go down again - woo! I lost another 1.5 pounds this week, making my total weight loss 13.5 pounds so far. Planning and making the right choices paid off. As of now, I only have two functions coming up next week and I will stick to my plan for dealing with these challenges.

Getting Healthy with Nutrisystem: Week 2.

Into my second week with Nutrisystem, I have learned that for me, planning is crucial. Most importantly, I need to plan my day around my food.

Like I said in my week 1 update, this plan includes a lot of food. To keep on track, I need to plan what I am going to eat and when I am going to eat it. I need to plan my grocery shopping, because there are only certain foods that I can supplement with. I am super thankful for the brand name shopping list that my friend Nancy (who just so happens to have her very own successful Nutrisystem story) pointed me to. It is one of the many things that Nutrisystem provides as far as support.

Nutrisystem Grocery Shopping List

In addition to planning the food that I am going to eat and shop for, I need to plan my exercise, because that is very important to the success of Nutrisystem. The plan suggests doing 10 minutes of exercise three times a day for a total of 30 minutes. For those that do not exercise on a daily basis, this is easy to plan. I already have a pretty consistent exercise schedule, so this is simple for me, as I walk for 35-40 minutes every morning already. It was actually the easiest part of my planning this week.

With all my planning, I managed to stay on track this week and saw another good weight loss. This week I lost 3 pounds, bringing my total weight loss to -7.5 pounds.

Getting Healthy with Nutrisystem: Week 3.

I had a stressful week. I went away three times in the past month. At the beginning of the week, the goal was to get caught up. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes at Beautiful Makeup Search. I get over a hundred emails a day - sometimes many more. (As of right now, I still have over 400 unread emails.) I need to open boxes, sort products, photograph products and try products. I have to edit the pictures and finally write about the products. I have a pile here yet to even be opened. And I need to talk to you guys! I have neglected social media. I am behind. It stresses me out.

Then things got worse.

We had a pretty big leak in our home. We thought we could dry out walls and carpet, but the carpet was just too soaked and it began to smell. Ugh. So we are tearing things up and putting in new floors. This is definitely not what I didn't want to be doing these last few weeks of summer.

On top of that, the most terrifying thing happened. My mom had a trip to the emergency room. She seemed to be okay and I thought things were under control. 36 hours later, she had to go back. You know that phone call when you know something is wrong? I was scared out of my mind when she called me because I could hear it in her voice. This time she was admitted.

Needless to say, things have been hectic and like I said, stressful. Do you ever feel like you have weeks and weeks of just one thing after another - nothing ever going right? That has been my life since June!

See also: Getting Healthy with Nutrisystem Introduction

Over the week, I have not kept to my Nutrisystem plan. Both my eating and exercise suffered. I only got in two long walks. I missed meals and planned healthy snacks that usually keep my fueled throughout the day. I didn't drink all the water that I needed to. I was not prepared. I had run out of meal bars that are normally something great to depend on in situations like this. I finally placed an order and will be keeping a few in my purse from now in, just in case. Eating healthy at the hospital cafeteria was not an option. You would think it is the healthiest place to eat, but it is not.

Learning to stay on track while having stress is something I am going to have to learn. I know it is not the end of the world. Every day is a new day and while not on track, I know I didn't over eat. So there is that! I just didn't stick to the plan. Even with the week not going my way, I reluctantly got on the scale. This week I lost 1/2 pound for a total weight loss of -8 pounds so far. I guess it goes to show that eating less does not equal more weight loss. There are a correct number of foods to eat and calories that must be consumed in order to be successful. I am hoping to do better next week and hit my one month goal of losing ten pounds. Wish me luck!

Getting Healthy with Nutrisystem: Week 1.

I have just completed my first week with Nutrisystem and I have one word to share that sums up my week: overwhelmed.

Nutrisystem Cinnamon Streusel Muffin

It's overwhelming to make a life change such as this. I am getting healthy and starting with this weight loss. Making the change and putting it into action is not as easy as I thought. It is overwhelming to stick to the program. And all of the food is overwhelming itself.

I traveled for a few days over this week and didn't really get "on program" until Sunday, but it has been pretty routine since then. Well, except for fitting in all of the food. My plan has me eating 6 times a day. Yes! 6 times. And while the portions are smaller, the food is very filling and I feel stuffed most of the day. There has not been one day yet, where I have fit in all of my food. Crazy, right? I know I need to do so in order to make this program work, and that it my goal for next week.

See also: Getting Healthy with Nutrisystem Introduction

My problem starts early in the day as I am not used to eating as soon as I wake up. I usually have a cup of tea in the morning when I get up around 6:30 or 7:00. I usually don't eat until 10:00 or so. This does not work with the Nutrisystem plan, so I am making some modifications. I am eating one of the Nutrisystem breakfasts (the Cinnamon Streusel Muffin, pictured above, is my favorite!) with my tea now. Then I am having my protein drink around 10:00. This is when I am actually supposed to be having my morning snack or PowerFuel, and I have yet to work that in. I will figure it out.

Even without staying 100% on the plan, I saw a nice amount of weight-loss this week. I hear that a larger than normal weight loss is pretty typical when starting a program, or life change like this. I am super excited to tell you that I lost 4.5 pounds this week. I am on my way!
